  • Designer specializing in UI/UX for today's web applications & mobile devices. I enjoy bringing together both the right & left sides of the brain to create pixel-perfect experiences that work.

Born in the arctic polar region of Madison, Wisconsin. I love cheese, bratwursts, and the Green Bay Packers. Shortly after moving to the North Shore of Duluth, Minnesota we experienced our first winter with a temperature of -70°F below zero with the wind chill, and record snowfall.

After years of clearing the driveways of snow, I moved to sunny (mostly cloudy) San Francisco, California. This is where I attended the Academy of Art University — and received a BFA in Web Design & New Media.

Armed with the knowledge of today's technologies, emerging applications, frameworks, and mobile platforms; I enjoy creating cross-brand, and cross-device experiences that meet contemporary design challenges.

I love what I do, and take great pride in the work I produce, and the opportunities the projects allow. I'm detailed oriented, and love learning new approaches, and applications that get the job done.

  • User experience is at the forefront of what I do. Whether starting a new project, creating a much-requested feature, or refining an existing interaction model. I take complex tasks and transform them into intuitive, accessible, easy-to-use designs.

To the right are some tools I've used throughout the early stages of design to create user flows, wireframes, prototype interactions, and perform usability tests.

  • As an interaction designer, I envision how people will use and experience a product or feature across a multitude of devices and screen sizes. I then collaborate with cross-functional teams (such as Engineering, Product Marketing, and Senior Management) to bring that vision to life in a way that feels fresh and inspired & all the while being consistent with the company's brand direction.

In this step of the process, I've used many of the tools to the right to transition a set of wireframes to high-fidelity mockups, generate production ready assets, and test responsive layouts.

    • Photoshop
    • Sketch
    • Illustrator
    • Xscope
    • After Effects
    • iOS Simulator
    • Keynote
    • Reflector
    • Cornerstone
    • TexturePacker
    • FontExplorer X Pro
  • Over the years I've had the opportunity to work with a variety of languages, applications, and frameworks. While I consider myself first-and-foremost to be a designer, when the opportunity presents itself I love diving into the deep end of the pool too.

In the past I've created responsive prototypes from high-fidelity mockups for user testing, been asked to collaborate with Engineering to create production-ready front-end code on a single-page app; or in the case of freelance, create fully functional websites using some of today's most popular content management systems.

  • Many of my weekends start by driving north or south along the coast, or taking out my map and picking a park at random to explore with my dog Bentley, and Canon camera in hand.

While serving mostly as a hobby these days, I have my own professional, multi-strobe studio setup. I'm well versed in the use of lightboxes, umbrellas, and other techniques that come in handy when the need for high quality, rights-free photographs are required for a project.

What people are saying about me.

Bob Rigel Education Specialist at PayPal

Paul is awesome! While his portfolio tells it all, he has asked me to write a personal perspective which pleases me very much.

He is, hands down, one of the most talented new media designers and developers I have ever met (and I've met quite a few). To make that even better, he is also one of the nicest people with whom I have worked.

I've known Paul for many years. I first met him at the Academy of Art University when I was the Director of the School of New Media and Paul was a student — not just an ordinary student but the one who set the bar in all of his classes! What made his performance turly unique was the calibre of his work (which was always stunning, cutting edge and perfectly executed) and his willingness to share what he learned with everyone. As an educator and a professional designer this demonstrates to me the best possible combination of talent and collaboration. Paul shines as an extremely create individual and an exceptional team player.

His awards and special projects made him one of the most celebrated designers to graduate from our school: Paul was selected to intern at Apple during his midpoint (a rare opportunity); Paul was selected to design our department's web site (the first department site at the university); He lead the New Media team during the kick-off of our Digital Publishing course resulting in the university's first-ever app on the Apple App Store; and in several annual Spring Shows, he walked away with the most awards in all areas of New Media design. It was telling that Paul was hired in his first professional position before he graduated.

So what are you waiting for? If i were you, I would get him on the phone right now and ask him over. Both you and your company will be very happy you did!

Tyler Hansen Designer at Bounty Labs

Paul is the best designer I have ever worked with. His attention to detail and artful arrangement of practically any information is unparalleled. I am a designer myself and when I see the typography and whitespace perfection achieved by Paul my jaw still drops. I wish I had his natural talent for this. On top of that he is a wonderful front-end engineer! After years of personally following projects through from design all the way to shipped code, he clearly knows and executes the process. Additionally, Paul is the nicest guy I know. I challenge you to find someone more kind and friendly. This sounds like a typical over-exagerated recommendation, but with Paul every ounce is true.

Joe Taylor Frontend Engineer at Square

Paul is one of the best coworkers and friends you can ask for. He is extremely hardworking, humble, and talented. He commits to deadlines and will work on anything that is needed.

He is truly a one of a kind designer that can do everything from solid design, motion, web prototypes and interactive. I would hire and/or work with Paul again in a second.

He is an asset to any place lucky enough to receive his contributions.

Haydn Adams National President of the Graphic Artist's Guild

Paul is the guy you want working with you. I've had the fortunate chance to work on a few projects with him, including the redesign of the Graphic Artists Guild website. I brought Paul onboard on the project because I knew he had both a high level knowledge of web development and a great ability to communicate on a team of other developers. He's kind, patient and an all around great guy. I look forward to more collaborations with him.

Taj Welsh User Experience Designer at LinkedIn

Paul, hands down, is one of the best designer/developers I have ever worked with. He had my site up and running within 3 weeks and even took the time to train me on Expression Engine (which my site was built upon and which was new to me). He made my goals his when it came to personal maintenance and efficiency. To this day he has made himself available to help me with any issues I might encounter regarding my site.

I have highly recommended Paul to many friends and colleagues and will continue to do. He's incredibly talented and a pleasure to work with. Anyone would be lucky to have such a talented person on his or her team.
